A

Alien Healing Device An alien device of unknown origin. Originally designed to be used as a form of capital punishment, this device transfers life force from one person to another (i.e. from a criminal to a dying person). Dr. Laura Rosen bought the device in 2256 and modified it so that it could be used without killing the person who is donating the life force. She then brought it to Babylon 5 where she used it on her illegal clinic until the device was confiscated by Dr. Franklin in 2258. During the next few years the Alien Healing Device was used to save Garibaldi (in 2259 by Franklin and Sheridan) and Ivanova (in 2261 by Marcus who died in the process).

A council that originally consisted of the ambassadors from the Minbari Federation, the Centauri Republic, the Vorlon Empire, the Narn Regime, the Earth Alliance and the League of Non-Aligned Worlds. The more powerful races each had a vote, whereas the League in its entirety had only one (though, if the council was unable to reach a decision, the League's vote was be the deciding one). The role of the council was somewhat changed after B5's secession from the Earth Alliance, the Shadow War and the birth of the Interstellar Alliance.
Babylon Project, The A project created by President Levy of the Earth Alliance after the unfortunate Earth-Minbari War. The goal of this project was to prevent similar wars of misunderstanding by providing a neutral place for commerce and diplomacy, namely the Babylon Station. The original Babylon Station was destroyed before it was finished, and the next two attempts were sabotaged during their construction, and were also never finished. Babylon 4 was operational for less than a 24 hours before vanishing without a trace. With funding from the Centauri and the Minbari Babylon 5 (smaller and cheaper than its predecessors) was constructed and indeed functioned as one of the most important diplomatic outposts for over twenty years.

First Ones, The The oldest races of the galaxy. Most of the First Ones left beyond the Rim during the million years leading to the last Great War, but some, like the Vorlons, the Shadows and the First Ones of Sigma 957, remained. G

G'Quan A Narn religious leader who presumably lived on the 12th century. At the time the Narn were not yet a space-faring race and the Shadows were holding the planet as a base. After the Shadows had almost all telepaths killed, G'Quan and the few remaining telepaths freed Narn from their rule.
Green Sector The center of B5's diplomatic activities. The diplomats' quarters (considered to be a part of the territory of the world of the ambassador) are situated there which is why the sector is a high-security area and off limits for others than diplomats, their attachés and guests, and authorized members of B5 staff.
Grey Sector B5's industrial and storage area. The Alien Sector is also situated there. There are several rumours around concerning mysterious occurrences on Grey Sector, parts of which has been dubbed by the personnel as 'The B5 Triangle'.
Grey Council A council, originally founded by Valen, that holds the highest power on Minbar. It originally had nine members, three of each caste plus a leader. The Grey Council is permanetely situated on a ship so that it is removed from mundane matters.

Delenn dissolved the council in 2260 after the balance of castes had been disturbed by giving the warrior caste a majority. For almost a year Minbar was without leaders and this eventually led to a war between the warrior caste and the religious caste. Delenn brought the war to an end in 2261 and reformed the council. She re-organised the entire Council by giving the warring castes only two places each and rewarding the worker caste, which had remained neutral during the war, with five. No leader was appointed, but the place was left empty in the memory of Neroon who had died in the pursuit of peace.

Interstellar Alliance
(ISA)
An economic and political Alliance founded by the League of Non-Aligned Worlds, Narn, Centauri and Minbar (Earth joined a few days later) in 2261 to maintain peace in the galaxy. The most valuable resource of the Alliance are the Rangers who patrol on the boarders of the member worlds and protect them from outside attackers, but remain neural in conflicts within the Alliance. Although the Alliance does not interfere with internal affairs of its members, the member worlds are expected to honour certain rules, including the declaration of principles. John Sheridan was the first elected president of the Alliance and he continued in this position until 2279 when he resigned and his vice-president (and wife) Delenn was elected president. The Alliance headquarters were originally situated on Babylon 5, but were moved to Tuzenor, Minbar in late 2262, after the facilities there were finished.
InterStellar News Network
(ISN)
A news channel that broadcasts to Earth and its colonies. In April 2260 some of the reporters made an attempt to uncover the corruption in Earth administration and as a result President Clark's forces took over the broadcast center and imprisoned the rebelling reporters. For the next year or so the channel was used mainly for distributing propaganda against the resistance movements. After forces loyal to Sheridan liberated Earth, ISN returned to back to its original form.

Isil'zha

The Minbari name (meaning 'future') for the brooch the Rangers carry. The jewel in the middle is circumfenced by a stylised image of a human and a Minbari who merge at the center. When the brooch is forged, it is kept in fire until its white-hot and is then submerged first into holy water, then into Minbari blood and finally into human blood. A legend says that when a ranger dies, each figure in his or her brooch sheds three tears; one of water and two of blood.

J

Jumpgate/point A jumpgate is a gateway to hyperspace; jump point a temporary 'window' which a large ship can open anywhere in space. Many of the jumpgates were originally created by some of the First Ones, though new gates are constantly constructed as well. Destroying jumpgates is forbidden by every law of civilised warfare, because losing the gates would result the destruction of the entire jumpgate system, which in return would mean the end of hyperspace travel.

K

Keeper A parasite the Shadows and their servants use to control their slaves. A Keeper is nurtured by a Drakh in his own body, until it is strong enough to be planted into a suitable victim. The Keepers cannot be killed exept by killing their 'parent' Drakh; in every other case the parasite merely grows back. In B5 history Keepers have been used to control at least Londo Mollari, David Sheridan and a member of the Mars Resistance known as John 'Captain Jack' Demeter.
Kha'Ri The ruling council of the Narns. When the Centauri took over the planet in 2259, they had all members of the Kha'ri (except G'Kar) killed. The Council was presumably restored in 2261 after Londo had Narn freed.

L

League of Non-Aligned Worlds A group of smaller races who allied themselves in order to stand equal beside the more powerful races such as humans, Narns and Minbari. Members of the League include the Pak'ma'ra, the Drazi and the Brakiri. This union of races was disturbed when the Shadows started wars between the members of the League. It survived through the war in one form or another, though, and was only dismantled in 2261 when all of its members joined the Interstellar Alliance.
Legions of Fire A resistance movement on the Drakh-controlled Centauri Prime during the 2270's. Lead by Vir Cotto, this small group of Centauri (and a few techno-mages) sabotaged the warmachines the Drakh-puppet Prime Minister Durla had had built in order to assault the Interstellar Alliance. In the end Legions of Fire managed to uncover the Drakh influence on Centauri Prime and to free their planet.
Lurkers Name used of the homeless and unemployed people (both humans and aliens) living in Down Below. Most lurkers are people who have arrived to B5 in the hope of a better life, but have then lost all the their money and are thus unable to even return to their homeplanet.
