I'd have to say "Infection". I understand it was introduced to foreshadow the "purity" themes as well as the "human being overtaken by machines" in "ship of tears" and the shadow vessel in general. Still, this Ikarran war machine X Nelson was too much early Star Trek reminiscient and didn't do a lot for me.
I do have some issues with "Grail" and "Exogenesis", though I found the idea of the true seeker appealing and with respect to Exogenesis, I always like it when Trek plots are turned upside down. Still, the Nakaleen feeder and the Vindrizi are a bit to standard Sci Fi for my tastes. TKO is saved by the Ivanova plot for me.
Contrary to a few others here, I like the "late delivery from Avalon", I think the war trauma suffered by David was written very well and it was acted brilliantly.
As for the much maligned "Grey 17", I understand that JMS has apologised for this episode publicly in the script book. Oddly I don't have that much of a problem with it. The Garibaldi sub-plot is trashy, and an unknown sector on the station is a bit implausible. But somehow I think the idea of confronting a guy like Garibaldi, whose house-god is Daffy Duck, with spirituality questions in this environment and by a guy like Jeremiah is quite fitting. It has the sort of surreal quality I'd imagine is necessary to introduce someone like Garibaldi to these things. |

I do have a few episodes which I skip most of the time.
1x12 By all means necessary
1x15 Grail
2x04 A distant star
3x04 Passing through Gethsemene
3x07 Exogenesis
3x13 A late delivery from Avalon
4x22 Deconstruction of falling stars
5x06 Strange relations
5x13 The Corps is the Mother, The Corps is the Father
In my opinion these episodes could have been left out. Nothing important to the plot happens and they're not as exciting or funny as some of the other non-plot-related episodes. |

Now I LOVED that episode, and I didn't see it as how wonderful J&D were. The whole point was that they didn't perceive themselves as heroes, merely people doing what had to be done. It was the people who followed who turned them from people to be respected, to people to be destroyed, to demi-Gods, but the people themselves (John, Delenn, Ivanova etc) were just people. We're back to Joe's point that a hero isn't anyone special, just an ordinary person who acts and does things others perceive as extraordinary. They did what had to be done but anyone could do it if they chose to. You may be cursed or blest depending on what happens next, but that's up to others and you can't control that no matter what you do.
I also liked the stuff that linked to 1984 and Canticle for Liebowitz, I liked Delenn putting the academics straight (they needed it desperately. They'd got so obsessed with their own theories they weren't actually being academically honest anymore, they were just promoting their own theories to support their publishing records). I also liked the way that at the end, after we've seen everything that would happen, John's convinced nothing of what they'd achieved would be remembered and Delenn's not bothered because it's not what matters. We're back to the ordinary people again.
So I don't think it's fair to label it as 'how great are J&D' because they didn't think they were that great. It's us, the followers, who added the garbage on top and, in so doing, forgot the people at the root of it all. Politician, academic, propogandist or monk they all had their perspectives and not one of them actually got at the people themselves because people are complex and not something to be pigeon-holed. Bottom line, we can all be like them if we choose to make a difference. You don't have to be born special, you can chose to be.

Totally agree. That was Delenn's point to the academics--they forgot the "truth" and made stuff up to support the parts they choose to ignore.
Sleeping in Light--awsome ep...still hard to watch on DVD (and I saw its original broadcast).
Grey 17--I must be one of the few who actually liked it. Loved Garibaldi investigating this mystery, loved the rhetorical question about air.
TKO--watched it once, and never again. ugh!!!
Zhadum--another great ep.
The only thing that drove me nuts in S5 was Lochley never, ever using Sheridan's given name even in private---hell even in the Lost Tales she never calls him "John". It just seems so unatural. |
